DPL Suite 808J is equipped with a Wacom Cintiq display - specifically the Cintiq 22HD. With this hardware, you have the ability to use a Wacom pen (or stylus) to draw directly on the display in software like Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects, and more.
In order to use the Cintiq in 808J, you will need to reserve or checkout the following items from the DPL Annex:
- Suite 808J
- Suite J Wacom Cintiq Tablet Pen
If the Cintiq is off, you can turn it on using the power button on the rear of the unit. Reach behind the Cintiq and the power button will be near the top edge in the center of the device.
Once the Cintiq is on, it will display a third desktop space for you to work (as seen in the photo).
The benefit of the Cintiq display is that we can use the Tablet Pen to control our cursor.
If you want to familiarize yourself with the controls on the Tablet pen or if you want to customize them, open the System Settings
Scroll down the menu to "Wacom Tablet"
Here, you can customize the Pen's settings including the Tip hardness, Tilt Sensitivity, button assignments, and more.
By default, pressing the top button of the Pen will provide the double-click function of a mouse. Pressing the bottom button will provide the right click function.
Additional settings for the eraser end of the Tablet Pen can be found under "Eraser."
Using the Cintiq and Tablet Pen
The Tablet pen will act as another mouse to move your cursor around the Cintiq Display.
Holding the pen close to the Cintiq will allow you to move the cursor without clicking.
When the pen makes contact with the Cintiq, it will register as a click.
If you hold the pen against the Cintiq and drag across the screen, it will act like a click and drag action on a mouse.
The Pen is also pressure sensitive in software that takes advantage of this functionality.
Using the mouse, you can drag software windows (such as photoshop) from the regular computer displays over to the Cintiq display.
Now we can use the Photoshop tools (like the brush, eraser, etc.) and draw directly on the screen. This will take advantage of the pressure sensitivity feature, as seen in the example below.
When touching the pen to the Cintiq lightly, the brush will draw a thin line. As pressure increases, the line will become thicker.
If you are just getting used to the Cintiq, Photoshop is a great place to practice. Since the Cintiq Tablet Pen essentially works as an additional mouse, you can use it with any software. Many users in the DPL also use the Cintiq to create vector based assets in Adobe Illustrator and After Effects.
